Science Week: Magnetic Force

6th May 2016

During science week, Miss Cusick told us that she dropped a coin behind her cupboard and tried to use a fridge magnet to get it out, but it wasn’t strong enough. She needed us to test some magnets to find out which would be the strongest for her to use to get the coin.

Working in small groups, each of us tested five different magnets, a bar magnet, a horse shoe magnet, a marble magnet, a rectangular magnet and a magnetic marble.

In order to test the magnets we placed a paper clip at 0cm on a ruler and slowly pushed each magnet in turn towards the paper clip. When the magnet attracted the paper clip we recorded the distance.

We discovered that the horseshoe magnet was the strongest as it attracted the paperclip from 6cm.

We really enjoyed this experiment and loved being scientists for they day
